National Seminar ‘Global Warming: Reasons, Challenges and Solutions’

Department of Chemistry, G.S.S. College, Belagavi organized a two days’ National Level Seminar on the topic ‘Global warming: Reasons, Challenges and Solutions’ on 15 and 16 March 2019. Renowned Activist on global warming Shri Rajendra Phatarpekar from Mumbai was the Resource Person for the seminar assisted by his co-worker Shri Vivek Dalvi. Prof. S.Y. Prabhu also addressed the participants in one of the sessions on the topic ‘India and Global Warming’. The seminar was spread over two days with six sessions. A total of 113 participants, including PG students of Chemistry and Botany, attended the seminar.

Day one (15/03/2019) began with the Inaugural followed by the keynote address by Shri Rajendra Phatarpekar where he addressed the audience about the burning issues of global warming. Shri Rajendra Phatarpekar was the Chief Guest and Smt. BimbaNadkarni, Vice-chairperson, College Managing Committee was the president for the Inaugural function. The first session was about ‘Global warming and extreme climate events’ where Shri Rajendra Phatarpekar explained extreme changes in climate due to global warming. Sessions II and III were post lunch sessions with session II covering ‘Evolution of life in the context of global warming’ and session III was a video documentary ‘Chasing the Ice’. 

Day two (16/03/2019) started with session IV with the Audio-Visual clips about ‘Extreme climate events around the world’ showing the catastrophe caused by global warming around the world. Session V was addressed by Prof. S.Y. Prabhu on the topic ‘India and Global Warming’ where he spoke about how global warming is affecting India. The last session after lunch was regarding ‘Discussion on solutions in the context of science and philosophy’ where Shri Rajendra Phatarpekar suggested some solutions to encounter global warming. The certificates to the participants were distributed during the valedictory function. Few of the participants expressed their views on the seminar during the valedictory function. Feedback was collected from the participants.
